A group of tourists got quite the surprise during their visit to the park. Thankfully, one of the visitors filmed the jaw-dropping sight for all of us to see. In the video, a herd of elephants is shown gently crossing a river until the front of the herd comes to a halt.  A crocodile emerges from the river and lunges at the trunk of a young elephant. The elephants cry out, but the crocodile holds on tight. The trumpet sounds from the elephants fill the area as the herd begins to retreat.  The man filming the video is freaking out just as much as the elephants. It’s fair to say that just about anyone would be stunned when watching this happen right in front of them. According to the San Diego Zoo, newborn elephants gain 2-3 pounds every day in their first year. We can calculate the weight of a year-old baby elephant averaging 930-1,395 lbs using this information.  That’s a hefty toddler and we can safely assume the one being attacked in this video is around that age. Finally, one of the elder elephants steps forward and stomps down on the crocodile, freeing the young calf from its grip. The herd trumpets in triumph and possibly as a warning to the visitors to get out of the area. One comment on the video reads, “I love how the elephants immediately made sure the young ones were safe first then they built a wall to protect the young ones, then the BIGGEST one jumped in to help and fight the croc.” Another person states: “That had to hurt—having a monster croc snap down on your trunk like that. Usually, the croc bites down and then rolls around to inflict maximum damage, but that elephant swung the croc around until help came. Still, that’ll leave a mark.” We’re glad the croc didn’t death roll the baby elephant and that everyone made it out safely. It truly shows that elephants are the kings and queens of the jungle.
